Bio-Latrine Center

Our innovative Bio-Latrine Center provides the community with some of the only available sanitary toilets and showers, serving on average 200 people per day. Our bio-latrine houses a bio-digester underneath six expertly engineered latrines, using green technology to reduce carbon emissions by converting human waste into methane gas. This gas is then harvested and used as cooking fuel for the daily feeding program for our school and clinic.  The process also produces retail-grade fertilizer that we can use in our garden and sell to the community.

Our bio-center has been an incredible success! Within just two short months of opening, the waste produced from the bio-latrine was producing enough gas to fuel the school stoves! This is much faster than expected — on average these latrines take 3-6 months to start producing methane.  The Shining Hope Bio-Latrine has already become a truly essential piece of the Shining Hope model in Kibera—providing a critical service to community members while sustaining the school and clinic, and thus improving the health of the local community.
