Women’s Health Program

This program caters specifically to women in Kibera, who are often overlooked in this community.  Women are the primary caregivers for their families and often solely responsible for children’s health.  The Women’s Program aims to ease this burden for Kiberan mothers, in a space where they and their children are the primary focus and concern.

For a nominal fee, women join the Women’s Program for one year.  This membership includes pre-natal and post-partum care for pregnant women (including any required tests or nutritional supplements), a well child program in which we vaccinate children in the community, and counseling targeted at issues of gender violence and domestic abuse.  We also provide family planning free of charge.

The women’s program is located on the clinic’s second floor, where our nurse-midwife runs the program.  The separation from the rest of the clinic’s operations guarantees the women’s privacy, and encourages an environment in which patient comfort and trust is of the utmost concern.  Various support groups and health talks focused specifically on women’s’ and children’s’ health provide a space where women can safely gather.

Every expectant mother is paired with a Community Health Worker, who visits the mother in between clinic appointments, and emotionally and physically supports her throughout the process of pregnancy (please see “Community Health Worker Program” for more information on this program). The Women’s Program is key to changing the way these women feel they can interact with and control both their families’ and their own health.
