The Shining Hope Clean Water Project will undertake a systematic, rigorous evidence-based and holistic approach to deliver drinking water that meets international purity standards and is affordable for local populations living in extreme poverty. This pilot, high-impact project will provide safe and reliable water to between 1,000 – 2,000 households daily (12,000 people per day). This pilot site can then grow to scale to serve a broader population through community distribution methods and direct expansion.
In addition to providing clean water, we plan to:
• Provide a comprehensive, integrated community program that includes health and hygiene training and education to generate demand for water and to help realize desired health outcomes.
• Implement an ongoing Monitoring & Evaluation program to ensure the integrity and sustainability of the ongoing operations, bring focus to quality control and provide guidance to future decision making and project planning.
• Pioneer a model of linking two high-impact interventions together: free schools for girls and clean water. Demonstrate the viability of this link and prepare for replication.
Pilot Project Impact:
Providing up to 147,000L of clean water/day, we can provide between 1000 – 2000 households with safe water daily. For every $20 invested, we will be able to provide a family access to clean and reliable water for the rest of their lives.
Treatment:
After reviewing water quality tests, current treatment recommendation is for a simple, cost-effective, and quality chlorination design, with added sand filter. Chlorination taste-testing will be conducted to ensure the marketability of the treated water.
Monitoring and Evaluation:
SHC recently finished data collection of a 1,200-household randomized survey using GPS sampling methods. This data includes metrics about current rates of home water treatment in the community. Results will be analyzed in the upcoming months and will inform further health and hygiene program design. Follow up studies will be used to measure the effectiveness of the intervention.
